Spirit of the Community

Young Volunteers in Burmantofts

SOTCSM2

Over the summer young people from the sixth form at Co-operative Academy took part in a community project organised by Learning Partnerships’ 2 <Way> Street Project, an initiative to improve local young people’s skills, confidence and employability through social action in the community.

This project was made possible by funding received from the Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank FoundationSpirit of the Community Awards’ to help people improve their local environment.

The team transformed the Cul de Sac area on Haslewood Drive, with a large scale planting project.

2 Way Street Project Co-ordinator - Belle Paterson said:

“These young volunteers have brought such energy and enthusiasm to the project; they are the spirit of the Burmantofts community. I hope they are proud of their achievements; it was a pleasure working with them.

"Many have arrived this year from places such as Eretria, Gambia and Kurdistan as well as European countries such as Spain and Portugal. They are already making a fantastic contribution to the city.”

Mr Asif Assistant – Vice Principle (Community/Sixth Form)

“These young people are new to the country and need many skills and competencies to integrate and function positively in the community.”

The group also enjoyed taking part in Burmantofts Community day organised by Housing Leeds, making up hanging baskets for local residents free of charge.

Here the group met with Recycle Leeds and took part in fun game to challenge their knowledge about recycling waste, this was part of the projects wider theme to encourage young people to care for the environment.

A big thanks to Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation and our partners Housing Leeds and The Co-operative of Leeds who helped make this project possible. Our thanks also to Ian, Communities Team (East North East).
